Correspondence, rosters, leaflets, invitations, programs, and clippings. Topics in John Love's papers include his military career at West Point, in the Mexican War, and as recruiter for the First Dragoons (Cavalry); working with Oliver H. Smith and Willard Carpenter raising funds for the Evansville, Indianapolis, & Cleveland Straight Line Railroad Company; marketing Gatling guns in the U.S. and Europe; and the National Soldiers Home. The papers of Mary Smith Love (1841-1885) deal mostly with her girlhood and early married life, and letters discuss family and social concerns. Newspaper pages (1875-1886) carry stories about Indiana governor James D. Williams, the death of Oliver P. Morton, the marriage of President Grover Cleveland, and prosperous black men in Indianapolis.

Dr. Richard Jordan Gatling (12 September 1818–26 February 1903) was born in Hertford County, North Carolina, to Jordan Gatling (14 May 1783–13 April 1848) and Mary Barnes Gatling (30 October 1795–30 September 1868). A native of New Jersey, Smith moved to Indiana and studied law. He served in the Indiana General Assembly, was prosecuting attorney for the third judicial district, and later served in the U.S. House and Senate. He founded the town of Yorktown in Delaware County. A native of Virginia, Love began his military career by attending West Point. He served in the Army until 1852, when he moved to Indianapolis and married Mary F. Smith. Love became involved in railroad finance with his father-in-law, Oliver H. Smith, and later with Richard J. Gatling marketing Gatling guns.
